The world is teeming with exercise regimens and trendy workouts beckoning you to give it a try - from Zumba to sweat-filled spin classes to strength training. There’s one movement discipline, however, that effectively ties all these facets together for me -- Pilates. What’s more, it’s an exercise that is accessible to everyone -- regardless of age, weight, or fitness level. The method is unique in that it doesn’t just tone, strengthen, and lengthen your muscles, but it alters the way you use your body physically and mentally. The mindful practice is designed to improve flexibility, coordination, muscle strength, posture, and circulation.
The best part? You can start your Pilates workouts online - straight from the comfort of your home. Whether you have a hectic schedule, are following stay-at-home COVID guidelines, you despise going to the gym, or you’re working within a limited budget, you can gain a long, lean, toned body just by virtually streaming your Pilates routine. Ready to take the first step? Here’s my beginner’s guide to getting the most out of practicing Pilates from home.
#1. Starting Your Pilates Practice Online
Here’s one truth everyone can relate to: life is expensive. So, to be able to show your body and mind a little self-care while saving money in the process is like scoring Willy Wonka’s golden ticket. Plus, you reap a few other benefits, like the convenience of better managing your time and the ability to practice on your terms, in a space you feel comfortable. Workouts range from quick 15-minute sessions to hour-long routines, making it the ideal exercise to fit into your schedule when the opportunity presents itself. Right there you’ve already eliminated the hassle of hopping in your car and driving to and from a gym or studio.
As a beginner, you’re able to move at your own pace and leverage repetition for the exercises you really want to master. Plus, day over day, our bodies may have different needs. For example, on a Monday morning, you may be craving a natural way to stimulate and energize your body. After hitting the snooze button one or two times, Pilates will provide you with gentle, mindful movements to promote healthy circulation, revive stiff muscles, and infuse your mind with a dose of motivation and positivity -- perfect for starting the week off on a healthy note. Later in the week, maybe you want to solely focus on improving core strength. Whatever the case may be, set aside some time to exercise a little self-love and you’ll see a corresponding uptick in your happiness and relationship with your body.
#2. Pilates Beginners: Tips For Creating a Routine At Home
Unlike many other forms of exercise, Pilates is beginner-friendly and super easy to adopt as a daily practice. I used to struggle to find the motivation to get to the gym, and once I was there, I despised every moment of it. With Pilates, however, I feel so refreshed and inspired post-workout that I’m completely addicted to it! I’ve never found a workout so easy to keep up with day after day until I discovered Pilates. So, for any beginners who feel a little doubtful, go at your own pace, mix things up, and do what feels right for your body. You’re going to find yourself simply bubbling with joy after incorporating Pilates into your self-care routine.
Also, keep in mind that exercises can always be modified to accommodate your needs. Maybe you need to bend your knees versus keeping your legs straight, or furnish your neck and head a little extra support – listen to your body and make adjustments as you see fit.
#3. Create a Space to Practice Your Pilates Workout
Whether it’s by a sunny window, in your backyard, or a comfortable nook in your living room, set up a space that allows you enough room for your entire body (with arms out) to fit while lying on your back. You always want to pick a space that’s quiet and tranquil. The goal is to create a place that helps you feel relaxed and centered – a place that’s stress-free and elicits a sense of joy. Because there’s a meditative quality to practicing Pilates, you want to select a space that will be distraction-free.
#4. Do I Need Equipment to Start Pilates Online?
One of the best parts of performing your Pilates routine from home is it requires no equipment. All you need is a flat surface and a mat. To be honest, even a cushy rug could work, but I highly recommend grabbing a mat. As you feel yourself progressing and able to advance in your movement and ability, you can add small props, such as a Pilates circle, balls, and wearable weights. These are not necessary at the beginning of your journey – simply something to keep in mind as you become a more advanced Pilates practitioner.
